He was actually French and lived in the 16th century. His job description was as an Apothecary which is basically a medicine man. He might create medicines and/or give advice about various ailments.

In the dark ages you didn’t have to pass a test to give medical advice and people just developed an interest in it. Nostradamus was such a guy and no doubt he delved in other popular pursuits of the time like Alchemy or the turning of base metals into gold. He also became a seer of future events and wrote cryptical Quatrains or poems about his future predictions. He did this to avoid being called a heretic by the powerful Catholic church of the time and put to death.

But before we go into the details of this medieval knight costume, let’s look into the background of who you are supposedly going as.  Richard The Lionheart, aka Richard Coeur de Lion, was ruler of England way back in 1189 AD and reined up to 1199 AD. In those days, the ruling nobility of England were of Norman origin so still spoke French, hence the French name.

In his ten years, he spent very little time ruling England and preferred to take part in the Crusades to capture the Holy Lands and Jerusalem. He seemed happier away from England in fact and when not on Crusades or being captured spent time in Normandy.

He famously sacked Acre and got to Jerusalem. He was a brave fighter but also quite brutal and barbaric but Saladin’s standards.

This led to a power vacuum in England which allowed his brother John to usurp the throne. If you have ever watched any of the Robin hood movies you will probably know King John as the the evil king (with his sidekick the Sheriff of Nottingham) trying to destroy Robin and his men. Richard usually has a bit part at the end of most of these movies where he either knights Robin for his good deeds or marries Robin and Maid Marion. After all, these are pretty good yarns.

Modern interpretations of Richard show him in a less favorable light, especially in his interest in England. And conversely, King John is seen to care more for the land and did some good things for it – like the Domesday book.

Now that you know a little bit more, let’s move on to the costume.

Richard The Lionheart Costume
