The battle of Agincourt was a famous battle that involved many knights. It was during the middle of the medieval period and may have been one of the first signs that the age of knights was coming to an end. The battle was a pivotal battle in the hundred years war between England and France. The battle was won by England and King Henry V and has been immortalized by the Shakespearean play.

During the battle, the chivalric code of behavior and the arms and armor that the knights used was seen to contribute to the downfall of the French forces. To this extent it signaled the beginning of the end for the noble knight that was finally mocked by Cervantes in Don Quixote.

The French forces were noblemen, dressed in suits of armor and on horseback. They were up against men they perceived as commoners in the English. But the English used the longbow rather than heavy armor. And they used it to devastating effect. The French knights, governed by their code of honor, ditched any semblance of strategy and tactics and charged head long towards the English ranks. The English rained down a volley after volley of arrows that cut the knights to pieces. As more knights poured into the fight the battlefield became crowded. The wieldy armor  put the knights at a distinct disadvantage to the unarmored English archers, who proceeded to slaughter the knights where they stood. It was a famous victory for the English.

Samurai lived by a similar code of honor and their role in Japanese society seemed very similar to European knights. They had to protect the weak and earn honor and respect in battle. They would even go so far as to commit suicide if they acted dishonorably in battle. Samurai wore a form of armor markedly different from medieval European suits. It was more flexible but even that was no match against modern weapons. The samurai dress ended in the 19th century but the code of honor was still evident in the Japanese army during the second world war.

And of course this has inspired people to dress up as the famous knights for fancy dress or Halloween parties. This article will focus on one of the more popular knights in the tale – Sir Lancelot. So get ready for some Sir Lancelot costume ideas.

Sir Lancelot is mentioned in many stories going back to the 12 th century. In most of these he is portrayed as a noble and gallant knight who strives to protect the needy and look after the weak, in keeping with the knight’s chivalric code.

He is perhaps most well known, as already mentioned, in the Arthurian legend. He is said to be brought up by the lady of the lake. Presumably the same one that tells Arthur to raise Excalibur. He plays some pretty important parts in the whole story.

Not least, he helps Arthur on many of his adventures. He helps Arthur search for the Holy Grail. He also has an affair with Queen Guinevere which ultimately leads to the destruction of the Knights of the Round Table. He is exiled and King Arthur is killed. I don’t think he did much jousting either or remove boils !

Not much is known about the appearance of Sir Lancelot and since he is a fictional character people have often added their own characteristics. Above all he was a well meaning knight that made wrong choices in the legend. He is as much at the heart of the legend as King Arthur is.

In terms of a costume, a standard knight costume can do the trick. Wearing a coat of arms that identifies you are Sir Lancelot may help to tell people who you are.

So what is a Renaissance knight costume ?

Well, to begin with, you have to understand that the changes that occurred due to the Renaissance were not uniform around Europe. They are claimed to have started in Italy and this was probably the epicenter of change. On the outer reaches of Europe things probably continued as they always had done. So you could see the traditional suit of armor adorning knights in far flung outreaches of Europe.

But as technology advanced, a suit of armor was merely cumbersome and didn’t protect the knight from new weaponary. Rudimentary rifles, pistols and cannons were figuring more in battle than ever before and a suit of armor was no match for these weapons. Speed of movement became more important in big battles and this also figured against heavy armor.

So a musketeer costume is a good example of a renaissance knight costume. There is no armor in this costume. It certainly looks good though. Funny how the three musketeers never fired a musket in their adventures as told by Alexandre Dumas.  They were more renowned for their sword fighting skills but in reality there principal use was to fire the early rifles or muskets.

A more traditional Knight costume is the evil knight. To be honest, I don’t think he comes from any particular period in history. He’s just a villain plain and simple, whether it is from dungeons and dragons fame or otherwise. This costume is sure to make a great impression at any party and the mask looks great.

There are plenty of movies that can spark the imagination of a child to want to wear a knight costume. The most recent are probably the Chronicles of Narnia series. These are great movies and books that have fascinated children ever since they were first published.

They have all the elements needed, like talking animals, witches, sword fighting, huge battles and armor. And the central characters are children that have a special role to play in the whole story. So if your kids have the chronicles of Narnia bug, how about getting the Prince Caspian costume or even the Sir Peter costume.

The Prince Caspian costume consists of a black tunic with the faux chain mail sleeves and hood. The faux chain mail is a polyester material that is light and comfortable to wear.

The Sir Peter costume is the officially licensed outfit from the movie. It also consists of a tunic/shirt of red with the Golden Lion coat of arms. Again faux polyester chain mail sleeves are comfortable but give a realistic look to the costume. Shoulder guards and helmet complete the look.

There are many other Knight, warrior and king costumes to please the kids. Maybe they have read about King Arthur and the Round table. They want to be Sir Lancelot and play at sword fighting with their pals. Check out some of these costumes as they are sure to fit the bill.

The valiant knight costume is a gray polyester fabric that forms the hood and sleeves to look like coarse or heavy chain mail. There are shin and shoulder guards and a blue tunic like top with gold piping.

The dragon slayer costume is inspired by the knights code of chivalry. Every Knight had to find their own personal Dragon to slay. This was more of a metaphor, I would guess, for a purpose  in life rather than an actual Dragon. As far as I know Dragons never really existed or maybe they were made extinct before my time by ardent knights like St. George. Anyhow the costume is a blast and sure to be a favorite with most kids.
